Computer Tricks & Treats

UNDO LAST ACTION

Did you just move, copy, rename, or delete something you shouldn't have? Not a problem. Windows allows you to undo your most recent action. Right-click the desktop or window (wherever you made the mistake) and select the Undo command. Alternatively, press Ctrl-Z, or, from inside a window, select Edit, Undo.

Ctrl-Z can undo in almost all of your programs and tasks. VERY IMPORTANT

UNIVERSAL SHORTCUTS

Here are a few keyboard shortcuts that you should never be without. They work in all Windows-based programs including Paint Shop Pro. These shortcuts will save you if your mouse goes on the fritz.

Ctrl-c = Copy
Ctrl-v = Paste
Ctrl-a = Select All
Ctrl-x = Cut
Ctrl-z = Undo
Alt-f-s = Save

Want to minimize an open window without reaching for the mouse? A keyboard shortcut should do the trick. Just press Alt-Spacebar, then N, in just about any program, and the currently selected open window closes.

Viewing file extensions(Such as Whatsit.doc)

You just need to make sure you set up your computer to show extensions. Bring up Windows Explorer and go to View, Folder Options. Click the View tab and uncheck the box that says Hide File Extensions For Known File Types.

File extensions are used by the computer to determine how to open or use the file. Very Important.

Caps Lock Warning Sound

You've done it a dozen times today: pressed the Caps Lock key when you really wanted the Shift key. To stop this bother, turn on an alarm sound that alerts you whenever you press Caps Lock, Num Lock, or Scroll Lock.
1. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Accessibility Options icon.
3. Click the Keyboard tab and then click to put a check mark in the Use ToggleKeys box.
4. Click OK.

SELECTING MULTIPLE ITEMS

When it comes time to clean out your Inbox, the best thing to do is move the messages you want to keep into folders and delete the rest. But it can take forever if you do it one at a time! Fortunately, it's easy to select multiple messages. Then, you can forward or delete them all at the same time. To select items that are next to each other, click the first item, then hold down Shift and click the last item. Everything in between will be selected. To select messages that aren't next to each other, click the first item, then hold down Ctrl Key and select the rest of the items. Once you've selected them, you can forward or delete at will! To delete completely out of the computer and bypass the deleted items folder or the Recycle Bin hold down the SHIFT KEY then hit delete. A dialog box will ask if you want to permanently delete. Click Yes. It's gone forever.
